A South Boston monument dedicated to war veterans who served in the U.S. Navy has reopened after a multi-year facelift.

The USS Kearsarge memorial has a new granite base to support the 1,900-pound anchor that represents a warship with a record that dates back to the Civil War.

The memorial was originally unveiled in 1930 and dedicated to U.S. Navy veterans from the Civil War, Spanish-American War and World War I.

The USS Kearsarge memorial now serves as a tribute for Navy veterans who served in all wars.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker and U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch were among those who attended Tuesday’s rededication ceremony at Marine Park along William J. Day Boulevard.
