NEEDHAM, Mass. —
Massachusetts Democratic Congressman Stephen Lynch questioned the United States’ gains from its involvement in the Iran conflict during an appearance on WCVB’s “On the Record.”
“It’s hard to put in place right now what we have gained from this. Let me ask you. Have we gained anything? I can’t say anything right now that’s clear,” Lynch said.
He acknowledged that the U.S. has degraded Iran’s nuclear weapon capabilities but cautioned against declaring victory.
“We’ve still got four-dollar gas, a gallon gas. There’s still not that flow of oil coming through,” he said.
Vice President JD Vance is heading to Pakistan for peace talks.
“If the Iranians are willing to negotiate in good faith, we’re certainly willing to extend the open hand. If they’re going to try to play us, then they’re going to find that the negotiating team is not that receptive,” Vance said.
Iran has accused Israel of violating the ceasefire, with hundreds killed in Israeli attacks on Hezbollah militia targets in Lebanon.
“I think it’s precarious at this point. But I know both sides are at least having a conversation,” Lynch said.
Lynch is cosponsoring a war powers resolution and hopes to gain more bipartisan support when Congress returns from recess next week.
“We know we’ve got quite a few Republicans, but we’re not quite sure we’ve got enough to prevail,” he said.
Lynch called President Donald Trump’s threat that Iranian civilization would die if it didn’t meet his demands, “detestable.”
