BOSTON — A Massachusetts congressman is calling for the United States to send aid to Ukraine, as two years have passed since Russia invaded its neighbor in Eastern Europe.

U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch was among the dozens who gathered on Boston Common for a rally Saturday afternoon.

Lynch was among several speakers who called upon American lawmakers to approve more aid for Ukraine. The congressman said he has visited Ukraine several times and said the country needs help from the U.S. to keep up its fight against Russian forces.

“It is not enough for America to hope for the best. It is not enough for us to just send them our best wishes. We should be sending the Ukrainian people the food they need to survive and the weapons they need to defend themselves,” Lynch said.

Lynch said he believes there are enough votes in the Republican-led U.S. House to pass an aid bill for Ukraine, but he also said Republican leadership is not allowing a bill to come to a vote.

Organizers of Saturday’s rally said the demonstration also marked the 10th anniversary of Russia’s occupation of the peninsula of Crimea. While the Russian occupation of Crimea began in February 2014, Russia did not annex the peninsula until the following month. The annexation is a move that most of the world denounced as illegal.
