NORWOOD, Mass. —

The Massachusetts congressional delegation is reacting harshly after Russia’s anticipated attack on Ukraine.

U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch, who represents the 8th congressional district of Massachusetts, called Russian President Vladimir Putin “a gangster” and said the Russian president is using similar tactics employed by former German dictator Adolf Hitler.

“I don’t think we’re on the right path. I don’t think sanctions are enough,” Lynch said Wednesday. “I think that the only thing that Putin fears is Russian boys coming home in body bags.”

By failing to threaten military action, Lynch said the United States and its allies are encouraging military invasions overseas.

“There’s war going on right now, but we’re not fighting back,” Lynch said. “I want to see the threat of military response. I don’t want to see us surrender.”

Sen. Ed Markey said his heart is with the Ukrainian people and Called for tightening economic sanctions. He said the United States should not have a military presence but stand ready to help in a humanitarian crisis.

“If there are refugees our doors should be open. We should be welcoming these Ukrainian refugees to the United States. We should say, ‘You have a home here,’” Markey said.

U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley, who represents the 7th congressional district of Massachusetts, said she supports targeted sanctions against Russia and further diplomacy in the conflict with Ukraine.

“The West tried to find a peaceful solution in Ukraine, but Vladimir Putin rejected diplomacy and chose war. He is solely responsible for the unprovoked bloodshed in Ukraine. He will be held accountable before Russia’s next act of aggression,” 6th District Rep. Seth Moulton said. “My thoughts are with the Ukrainian people as they fight for their autonomy and freedom. They did nothing to provoke this violent attack.”

U.S. Rep. William Keating, who represents the 9th congressional district of Massachusetts, said Russia’s aggression against Ukraine is an attack on democracy.

“Their determination is strong and our determination in terms of reacting to this will be strong. I hope we are joined by any peace-loving country in the world and certainly every democracy in the world. This is a threat on democracy, and if we fail in fighting back, democracy will fail as well,” Keating said

He recently returned from the Munich Security Conference and he is introducing legislation that would levy more sanctions against Russia.

“Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine is a violation of international law, and constitutes a massively destabilizing event with repercussions that will be felt for decades to come. Vladimir Putin and his enablers must pay a heavy price for their unjustified aggression,” 3rd District Rep. Lori Trahan said. This content is imported from Twitter.
