Congressman Stephen F. Lynch Statement on Mayor Thomas Menino

“Tom Menino will be remembered as one of the greatest Mayors in the history of Boston.  Over the past 20 years, he has led the transformation of our city and launched us into a new century.   Tom had a vision for the city’s future, and worked 18 hours a day to make that vision a reality.  From the South Boston waterfront to Dudley Square to Downtown Crossing – he transformed entire neighborhoods of our city and created new opportunities for citizens of every background.

We have had other strong mayors in recent Boston history, but Tom Menino is special.  He’s special because he never forgets about the little guy.   He has focused on the neighborhoods and the working families who live in them, and is always available to community leaders, parents, and anyone who needs help.  Throughout his years in politics, both on the City Council and in the Mayor’s office, Tom set a bar that most of us could never live up to.  He never forgot that, at the end of the day, his job was about the people, and making their lives better.  I have tried to follow his example in my own career, and I know it has made me more successful.

The City of Boston, and all its people, will greatly miss his leadership, his vision and, most importantly, his love for Boston’s neighborhoods and residents.  Mayor Menino is a true champion for this city and his legacy will be felt for decades to come.  I wish him, his wife Angela, and their family the best of luck.”
